The Challenges

A key focus of the project was to create a sense of welcome for patients, their families and the hundreds of staff who inhabit it daily.

Northern Beaches Hospital is an enormous facility and a very bold design; working at this scale brought more than one challenge including how to make such a big building feel warm and welcoming.

The new ceiling system also needed to allow for easy service integration and be easily accessible for regular maintenance.

The Solutions

Both art and nature play a vital role in Northern Beaches Hospital, for their emotional support and contribution to wellbeing. The hospital was designed considering the inclusion of art and nature and natural materials such as wood were included in the specifications.

Natural wood has been proven to improve mood and reduce anxiety. The feelings of natural warmth and comfort that wood elicits in people have the effect of lowering blood pressure and heart rates, reducing stress and anxiety and increasing positive social interactions.
A feature timber ceiling can also make a room look and feel both bigger and brighter.

The Austratus Fin Profile was specified as it offers that warm and welcoming feeling and adds dimension and dynamic shadow lines to the space. The system also offers easy access to the soffit for regular maintenance of essential services and smoke extraction, ventilation system.
